Blurred Vision

Blurred Vision

Luke 22:34- 36

“But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly; For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

This is a verse that I want hanging on the post of my door, so that I may always see the warnings of Jesus Christ and take them seriously. If you can read verses like these and then walk away unstirred, continuing with everyday life, then maybe you don’t really “Believe” the word of God; but if you believe God, then these verses will put an urgency in your soul that will impact you forever. You see, when Jesus says “take heed”, He is telling us to LISTEN CAREFULLY to what He is saying, and after listening, DO WHAT HE SAYS!!!

If I’m driving my car and I pass a warning sign that says there is a cliff ahead, and I zoom right past the sign like it wasn’t there, then I really am not taking it seriously, and will probably pay with my life. But if I “take heed” to it, then I will have a healthy fear, will be alert, and make sure not to drive off the cliff. In the same way we must listen to the words of Christ, or it will have eternal consequences. As Jesus repeatedly said, “Let him who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (Matthew 11:15; 13:9)

Directly preceding this passage, Jesus told us that He would return again, coming in the clouds with power and great glory. He warned of many distressful signs that would come first, most of which have taken place, and then the end will come. Jesus is coming to return for His own, for those whom He has redeemed by His own blood and who eagerly await His coming. The Lord knows those who are His, and they are those who live as if He could come back tonight. Friend, would He find you faithful this day?

In these verses, Jesus urges us to stay clear of things that will blur our vision and take our eyes off of the importance of the spiritual life in Him. Even the cares of this life distract us from looking on to the invisible, eternal elements. These are what count, where as the visible things of this world will all pass away (Luke 21:33). Only His word will not pass away, therefore let us focus on it with all of our might, having our heavenly eyes fixed straight ahead, and our ears strained to hear His voice.

Do not let this world make you drunk with pleasure, entertainment and self-centered living, which things blur your vision; For Jesus said that He will come at a time when we do not expect Him, and it will be a snare to the whole world. Thus we are given this command: “Watch therefore, and pray always…”.Why? So that we may be counted worthy to escape God’s judgment and to stand in righteousness before the Son of Man.

Let us be as those who wait for their Master to return, being obedient to Him out of love and gratitude. Oh Lord, please help us to be free from the deceitfulness of this life, and to have a burning heart for You only! Jesus, please come soon, but first help us to reach this dying world for You, so that they may know You as we know You! Maranatha, come Lord Jesus, come!

Love in Christ, Jonathan Ball
