Speak for the Speechless!
Proverbs 31:8, 9
“Open your mouth for the speechless, in the cause of all who are appointed to die. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.”
Oh Christian, Oh Christian, who are those appointed to die?! Do you not see that God has sentenced humanity to death, and unless we speak up the world will perish for eternity!? Yes it is by God’s power that men are drawn and converted, but He has chosen you and I as the vessels in which to deliver His grace. God has appointed His elect as a means of reaching the world, and has commanded us from the Old Testament to the New to turn people’s hearts to God, that they may be saved (Daniel 12:3; Psalms 51:12, 13; Matthew 28:19- 20).
“Do you not see them, they are going down to hell by the thousands!” (Charles H. Spurgeon). In order for us to fight the fight, we must have eyes to see the war. We are commanded to open our mouths for the speechless, to speak on behalf of those who are appointed to die. Who are those appointed to die? Look around you, do you see men and women, boys and girls, young and old? God has declared that unless they repent of their sins and receive forgiveness through the cross of Christ, they will perish forever, in hell, with no hope of escape (Luke 13:3, 5).
You might say, “God is love and would not do this”, but the God of the Bible is a just and holy God, and cannot pardon the guilty (Numbers 14:18). A judge who lets a criminal escape is not a just judge. So also God cannot let adulterers, liars, thieves, blasphemous, idolaters, God-haters, homosexuals, self centered, self seeking, lustful mankind into heaven, or He would not be good. No, He must punish sin, and He will. If you have a hard time accepting this, it is for the same reason that a criminal has a hard time accepting the penalty for his crimes. But if we are Children of God and have been redeemed by the shed blood of Jesus Christ, (who received our punishment on the cross so we could live) then we understand that God is just, and therefore grieve over those who are still perishing.
What then shall we do? How do we fight for the souls of men? Just as we should stand up for children who are being murdered through abortion, and fight for the freedom of sex slaves, and protect the helpless, in the same way we should seek to save the lost. Proverbs 11:30 says that he who wins souls is wise; this is because there is nothing more costly than the human soul. The eternal soul of man is so priceless to God that He took human form and shed His own blood so we could live. Praise Jesus who lives forever!
Therefore let us open our mouths in prayer towards God, interceding for all men that they might be saved; and let us open our mouths towards men, sharing the words of the everlasting gospel, that they might believe unto salvation. For how shall they believe if they do not hear? And how shall they hear without a preacher (Romans 10:14)? We must live out our faith and then share it with the lost, for that is who Jesus is seeking; that is who Jesus is earnestly is pursuing (Matthew 1812-14). If we love Him we will follow Him, so that where He is, we may be also, and what He is doing, we will do also.
(Daniel 12:3) “Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.”
With love, Jonathan Ball
