Watchman on the Wall

The Watchman on the Wall
Ezekiel 33:7
“So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me.”
God has different callings on different people, and has diverse activities for each member of Christ’s body, but all are important; for the same Spirit works all in all to advance the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 12:4- 7). In the Old Testament, the tribe of Issachar was known for having “understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do” (1 Chronicles 12:32); other tribes had different skills and abilities, and when they worked together they could be unstoppable in the LORD.
In the same way that God gave Issachar great insight and understanding for the benefit of Israel, so also God has given the New Testament Church watchmen who have the ability to see into the spiritual world. This is called the gift of discernment (1 Corinthians 12:10) and is for the protection of God’s people. This gift helps the beholder discern truth from error, seeing the crafty schemes of the devil so they can expose them to the Church. They see what we do not see, and then declare it to us.
Visualize a man on a wall; he is raised up above us all (not in value but insight) so he can see further than we are able. This person is assigned there for the very purpose of spotting danger before it arrives; danger that the rest of us are unable to yet see. Once this man or woman sees danger, they blow the trumpet to warn us all that peril is near. If we listen and take action we will escape, but if we reject the warnings, our blood will be upon our own heads, for the watchman did his job.
In the Church, God has given us some who have the gift of discernment, for spiritually they can see further than is possible for us. The Holy Spirit has anointed them to discern the spiritual world so they can alarm us of satan’s every move. They are able to detect the true motives of people and the spiritual source that drives them. They can warn us, but will we listen?
God burdens them with concern for His children, and because of love, they must tell us what they see. They see satan’s plots working through movies and music, they recognize the hidden agendas of the dark side working through false prophets and teachers, posing to be shepherds of God but who are inwardly ravenous wolves; they see new age spirits entering the Churches, enticing sheep into alignment with occultism and eastern practices. At God’s command they must expose these things (Ephesians 5:11) or our blood is on their head (Ezekiel 33:6).
With much love, Jonathan Ball
