Is God Angry at Me?
1 Peter 1:16, 17
“Because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’ And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear;”
If you were to hear someone say that God is angry with people, would your response be, “that’s not my God!” ? If so, let us examine the Scriptures together to see if your God is indeed the God of the Bible. Today, in an age of tolerance for everything except “truth”, our minds have been conditioned to accept an idolatrous image of God, one who is indifferent to sin and kindly accepts all manner of wickedness. Almost all of our songs are about love, love, love, and many people lack an understanding of the holiness of God.
Contrary to popular belief, God is angry with the wicked every day. If He were not angry at sinners then Jesus would not have been crucified in our place. Saying that God does not have righteous anger towards a hateful, adulterous and rebellious world is the same as saying that a judge is indifferent towards murders and rapists. God has to punish our wicked deeds because He is just. It is in His abundant mercy and love for His enemies that He provided Jesus as our Substitute; the Just being punished for the unjust.
Read the following Scriptures carefully and fear God. Psalms 7:11- 13 says, “God is a just Judge, and God is angry with the wicked every day. If He does not turn back He will sharpen His sword, He bends His bow and makes it ready. He prepares for Himself instruments of death; He makes His arrows into fiery shafts.“ You can either chose to believe what God says about Himself and fear Him, which is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10), or you can reject Scripture and worship an idol. But those who are His know His voice and will submit to truth.
Let us go on: the God of the Bible actually kills people. God killed two men because He did not like their conduct (Genesis 38:7,10), He struck Uzzah dead for touching the Ark of the Covenant in disobedience (2 Samuel 6:7) and He destroyed a fully populated world with a flood because the intent of their hearts were only evil continually (Genesis 6:5-7). He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah with eternal fire because of their homosexuality and immorality (Jude vs.7). He killed 23,000 Israelites in one day for sexual immorality, and we are told that it was written as a warning for us who want to live the same way (1 Corinthians 10:6, 8). Now let’s go to the New Testament to see if God (who never changes) has changed: After Jesus established His Church, God killed Ananias and Sapphira for lying to the Holy Spirit, and the fear of God came over His people (Acts 5:1- 10). Today we see ministers doing the opposite, robbing people of holy fear by preaching a watered down message that say God is not angry at you. But Jesus said not to fear men but to fear the One who has the power to kill you and cast your soul into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him (Luke 12: 5). Even today the world is reserved to be judged by fire (2 Peter 3:7), and Revelations tells us that Jesus, the Lamb will tread the wine press of God’s wrath (Revelations 19:5; 6:16). John 3:36 says, “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
So where do you stand, dear friend, are you still at war with your Creator or have you made peace with Him through the blood of the cross? God’s holy nature will not be compromised. He will do what is right and should be feared. Know that He offers us mercy today, and has no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but He will not be mocked. What you sow in life, that you will reap in eternity (Galatians 6:7-9); either death or life, so chose life and enjoy a right relationship with the Living God. And you will live forever with Him! He is rich in mercy to the humble of heart, and will give you an inheritance with His Son Jesus Christ.
